Where a payout can fail

Before funding, during conversion, or at the receiving bank. Each point leaves the money in a different place and in a different currency.

Why "failed" is the wrong state after conversion

Once funds are converted, they still exist. Marking the payout "failed" hides a real balance that someone has to own and resolve.

The held state

We move the payout to a held state and record the converted balance, its currency and its owner, so operations and finance see it on the same screen.

Options and their cost

Retry to corrected details, reverse the conversion, or return to sender. Each has a different fee and FX exposure, which the operations view shows before anyone chooses.

Customer communication

Support scripts explain what happened, what the options are and when the customer will hear next, without promising a date the partner has not confirmed.

Reconciliation entries for each option

Each resolution path writes its own entries so the clearing accounts return to zero. [OWNER: add the decision table]
